Are Corns and Bunion the same thing ?

Bunion

Bunion

This question is pretty much typical when asked to a  person who has a non-medical background but there is a slight difference which gets prompted when a detailed research is done on it.

When extreme pressure is applied on the feet, the skin area develops a bump over it , which can be either on bottom or upper side of the feet. This condition is normally referred to as corns and it affects the nerves , but when after regularly wearing high heels sandals causes our bones in toe  to start growing in towards the other toe irritating the skin , this condition is referred to as bunion . There is no hard and fast rule that only a person that is wearing high heel shoes are prone to bunions , there are equal chances for others to develop bunions as well.

Different Tips to reduce discomfort caused by Bunions :

  • Avoiding high heels sandals and uncomfortable foot -wears.
  • Icing the affected area .
  • Take a bandage and tie it around the affected area to avoid any further injury or discomfort .

Is there any other option besides home remedies for curing Bunions ?

Yes , there are certain situations where home remedies fail but that doesn’t mean that they are bad or unsuccessful but that may means that you have become late in applying them or may be your condition is beyond the treatment of home remedies , then in that case , you need to visit a doctor and most probably he would suggest you for a surgery.

There are two successful treatment available for bunions up till now and are preferred one over the other depending upon the bunion size and its seriousness . Following are the two surgical treatments are :

  • Bunionectomy : This treatment is preferred when there is a small bunion and so it can be treated by a surgeon by simply cutting out the affected tissue and fixing the toe to its actual position
  • Arthrodesis : This treatment is preferred over the former when there is a high urgency and when the condition is serious.  This process is quite similar to the former but there is a slight difference that in this the surgeon removes the affected area by cutting but permanently fixes the joints together so that the bone doesn’t grow abnormally in size again .

Are these treatments safe ?

Yes, these treatment up till now have been successful and are reported safe too since even after surgery the patient is kept under the observation of a doctor and a foot cast is fitted immediately to the foot after the surgery to ensure proper healing of the foot and the patient is advised complete bed rest for 2 months . After 2 months the doctor removes the foot cast and the patient foot becomes normal again but a person needs to take utmost care of his foot and make sure to avoid pressure full activities for a couple of months.
