What is Ringworm?

Ringworm also known as the Dermatophytosis is a fungal infection which occurs upon the skin of the humans as well as upon the skin of the animals. The term given to the disease creates a myth about the disease being caused by parasitic worms but in reality the disease is caused by fungi. The disease affects the outer skin and hairs of the person or animal affected. Fungi feeds upon keratin which is found in the upper layer of the skin.
Symptoms OF Ringworm
The infected area rises in a red colored circle giving it a kind of red ring form form. If the disease takes place on the foot then the infection can even cause athlete’s foot.
When on nails , causes them to become thick, disrupt their growth. Finally nails loose their color and fall.
The disease can be transmitted from humans to animals or vice – verse.
Prevention & Treatment OF Ringworm
- Try to avoid sharing of your clothes especially one’s sports equipments as well as garments like towels and napkins.
- Always wash clothes with anti fungi soap and try using hot water for washing.
- Always walk with slippers or shoes on. Avoid walking barefoot, it increases one’s chances of getting infected easily. Always keep your shoes and slippers clean.
- Always wash your hands after touching pets. It decreases the chances of getting infected.
To cure the disease use anti fungal agents such as tolnaftate, terbinafine hydrochloride or ketoconazole this should be used almost two times a day until ringworm is cured.
