The sudden unchecked and uncontrolled contraction of muscles causes muscle cramp.The pain is experienced due to lack of sodium and potassium in the body, though there are other reasons too.Muscle cramp are very common.Everyone at least for once have experienced the muscle cramp.The cramp either last for few seconds or little longer than few minutes.
The muscles which are under our control can experience cramp.There are 4 types of muscle cramp-dystonic cramp, tetany,contractures and true cramps.The causes are many for muscle cramp such as any sudden activity, injury,dehydration and low amount of calcium and potassium in the body.
Muscle cramp remains for few minutes only but if it is severe and unbearable then try to stretch your muscle, hold it in stretched position and return to normal only when you get little relief in pain.
If you afraid of doing something then you can also just sit for sometime and stop doing the work you were doing and lok for the pain to vanish.
Muscle cramp prevention:
a)Try to maintain the electrolyte balance in your body when you have to run for an half an hour or more.Increase the intake of sports drink instaed of water.
b)Keep body hydrated and drink water before and after you do any running activity.
c)Do regular exercise and stretch your muscles to make them loose and flexible.
d)Tone your muscles even when you are not stretching.
Medicines are not really needed to cure the cramp because the pain occurs only for short period of time and stops before the medicine starts effecting the body.You can also massage the portion of the muscle where you feel the cramp or apply a hot pad whose warmth gives a lot relief to the pain.
