Hypersomnia symptoms and treatment

Generally, people need 6-9 hours of sleep to feel completely rested and to maintain healthy sleeping habits.Any sleeping disorder can effect that habit in a way that either you get too much sleep or no sleep at all.One of such sleeping disorder is Hypersomnia.Hypersomnia is opposite of insomnia characterize by excessive daytime sleepiness even after getting a good amount of  7-8 hours of sleep at night.

The person suffering from Hypersomnia finds difficulty to stay awake during the working hours of the day.People who have hypersomnia can sleep at any time and have sleeping related problem such as reduced amount of energy or trouble thinking clearly.

Symptoms of Hypersomnia:

People with hyersomnia always feel drowsy, even at daytime no matter how much sleep they receive.The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes has mentioned some of the symptoms in which the disorder can be recognized by a person.

  • Frequently need naps.
  • Disrupted sleep at night yet you want to aleep longer.
  • Anxiousness or irritable.
  • Dizziness or lack of energy.
  • Loss of memory.
  • Hallucinations.
  • Restlessness and slow speech.
  • Loss of appetite.

There are several causes of Hypersomnia such as overweight,fibromyalgia, brain damage,sleep apnea or it could be heredity.There are two main types of Hypersomnia-Primary hypersomnia(experienced for long period of time), and Recurring hypersomnia(experienced for many days with long periods with no symptoms)

There is no real treatment for hypersomnia since real cause of this disorder is still not known.Treatment for hypersomnia is largely dependent on the symptoms, the person is suffering from.Your doctor may prescribe various stimulants such as amphetamine,,methylphenidate and modafinil to treat your sleeping disorder.

Try to have good sleeping habits such as go to bed at a fixed time and get up early at the same time every morning.Exercise for at least for 20-30 minutes and avoid too much of caffeine and alcohol.
