Bunion,causes symptoms and treatment
Bunion is an abnormal formation of lump like structure at the edge of the bottom of big toe.The lump puts pressure on the toe and makes it turn towards the other toes of the foot.Sometimes the pressure causes pain and swelling in the toe.The person finds difficulty while walking and feels uncomfortable wearing shoes.
Bunions are common among women who wear high heel, people who wear narrow and pointed shoes or it could be inherited from family.
Causes of bunion:
- Foot injuries
- Improper footwear
- Arthritis
- Putting pressure or stress on feet
- Congenital deformities
- Hereditary
- Flat feet which pressurizes the MTP joint
- Short or long metatarsal bone
- Amputation of second toe
- Neuromascular disorders
Symptoms of bunion:
If you have bunion you may experience:-
- Redness
- Swelling
- Lump on outside of the base of your toe
- Soreness or tenderness
- Constant pain
- Not able to move your big toe
- Thickening of skin
- Corns
- Burning sensation or numbness in the big toe
- Experiencing pain while you wear shoes
- Callous formation
The effect of bunion vary from mild to severe.It is not necessary that you have pain while you are suffering from bunion, there are many cases where people have severe bunion and they do not experience even a single pain and people who have mild bunion but experience a lot of pain.
Treatment of bunion:
Consult your doctor for the treatment of bunion.The first step towards the treatment is to take good care of your foot.Bunions can be treated easily, if you recognize them at an early stage.Try to minimize pressure on your feet.Avoid wearing high heels or tight fitted shoes.
If your bunion is giving you lot of pain and growing too large then it is better you go for surgical methods.Surgery is very helpful in treating bunions permanently.
