Foods rich in roughage for healthy diet

Roughage rich diet is essential for the right functioning of the digestive system, the heart and to control the blood sugar.Dietary fibre or roughage consists of many health benefits, from reducing constipation to controlling weight.

Foods consisting of dietary fibre includes fruits,vegetables, whole grain foods like beans, pulses, and porridge.

Foods rich in dietary fibre/roughage are:

1)Almonds- Almonds is rich in health benefits.It is said to have at least two almonds every morning each day for the proper functioning of the brain.Almonds are rich in calcium, riboflavin,vitamin E and iron.They provides a good amount of fibre to your body.

2) Beans- According to the USDA Nutrient Database, regular intake of black beans provides approximate  30 gm of roughage.There are various variety of beans available which are rich in fibre such as cannelloni beans, garbanzo beans, butter bean sand kidney beans.High blood pressure patients are advised to have dry beans which are less in sodium compared to other beans.

3)Lentils- Lentils are said to be higher in dietary fibre compared to black beans.Lentils are easily cooked and easily available too in the market.They provide  very good source of of fibre rich diet.

4)Fruits and vegetables- The minerals and vitamins found in fruits and vegetables works like a golden box of healthy diet as it aids in oral health, control blood pressure,and protect eyes from harmful diseases.Fruits such as apples, eggplant, blueberries and broccoli are sufficiently rich in fibre and roughage.

5)Whole grains-White rice contains ample amount of roughage as compared to refined grains.It aids in reducing weight, heart risks and control the blood sugar.Other whole grains such as steel cut oats, whole wheat pasta and whole grain granola are also good for health.
