Ulcerative Colitis, causes, symptoms and treatment
Ulcerative colitis is a disorder which causes inflammation in the top layer of large intestine.It is also known as ulcers which occur in the stomach.It is a type of inflammatory bowel disease which causes problem in the colon and the rectum. Ulcerative Colitis can affect person of any age but it is most commonly seen in the people who are less than the age of 30 years.
Ulcerative Colitis causes inflammation of large intestines that leads to diarrhea and bleeding.
Causes of Ulcerative Colitis:
Generally the real cause of ulcerative colitis is still not known.People suffering from this disorder usually have problem with their immune system.In this condition the ability of the body to defense against harmful bacteria and viruses weakens as a result causing ulceration and severe inflammation of large intestines.
Some of the causes of ulcerative colitis includes-
- Family history.
- Environmental factors. and
- Use of medications such as isotretinoin.
Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis:
Symptoms of ulcerative colitis can range from mild to severe.The fluctuation can occur from time to time.
- Stomach or abdominal pain which goes away with the bowel movement.
- Various gurgling sounds felt in the abdomen.
- Blood in stool.
- Rectal pain
- Vomiting and fatigue
- Mouth sores
- Joint pain and weight loss.
- Skin lumps.
Severe level of ulcerative colitis may also cause other organ problem such as kidney stones,swelling in joints,liver problem,colon cancer and osteoporosis.
Treatment for Ulcerative Colitis:
Treatment of ulcerative colitis depends upon its severity.People who have mild ulcerative colitis can be cured with some medications while people who are suffering from severe ulcerative colitis may need surgery to remove the affected colon.
Anti-TNF agents are also used to cure mild to severe ulcerative colitis.
The main aim of treatment is to decrease the repeated attacks and to cure the affected colon.Besides this a proper diet should be maintained to avoid the situation where the gas symptoms and diarrhea may become more worse.
- Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
- Avoid foods rich in fiber such as popcorn,beans and nuts.
- Avoid fried and fatty foods.
- Avoid intake of milk products.
